Our proposals

Governing through trust, not fear

Côte d’Ivoire has paid too high a price for political crises. The URD stands for a Republic where people debate instead of clashing, where the judiciary is independent and where being in opposition is never a crime.

What we see

Ivorians are tired of tension

Confrontation too often takes the place of political debate. Dissenting voices are prosecuted instead of being heard, and fear sets in where trust should prevail.

For the URD, peace is not the absence of conflict: it is a nation’s ability to settle its disagreements through dialogue and the law. Stability cannot be decreed; it is built, one institution at a time.

What we propose

Five commitments for a peaceful Republic

Proposal 1

A permanent political dialogue

A regular framework for consultation between the government, all parties, civil society and religious authorities, before any major reform.

Proposal 2

An independent judiciary

Judges protected from all political pressure and transparent procedures, so that everyone is judged on facts and not on their opinions.

Proposal 3

Guaranteed public freedoms

Freedom of expression and of peaceful assembly protected and regulated by law rather than repressed.

Proposal 4

Gestures of appeasement

Concrete steps to ease tensions for people prosecuted for their opinions or political commitments.

Proposal 5

Reconciliation through truth

Work on memory and reparation for past crises, so that an election never again costs lives.

A country cannot be governed lastingly by force or by fear, but by trust.
Danièle Boni-Claverie, President of the URD

Building together
