A small party has no choice but to form alliances; it does, however, choose the terms of those alliances. In April 2014, Danièle Boni-Claverie summed up the URD’s position within the Alliance of Democratic Forces: the party stands with its partners, it does not revolve around them. The phrase sheds light on a path made of successive rapprochements, always coupled with a claim to autonomy.
2009-2012: the CNRD and the Presidential Majority
According to the press of the time, the URD was part of the National Congress of Resistance for Democracy (CNRD), a component of the Presidential Majority, from its early days. In November 2010, its President campaigned for the second round of the presidential election in the Tiassalé region.
2013-2014: spokesperson for small parties, then the AFD
In January and February 2013, Danièle Boni-Claverie was spokesperson for four parties that refused to take part in local elections after dialogue sessions they considered fruitless. In 2014, the URD joined the Alliance of Democratic Forces formed around the FPI — “with, not around”.
2018-2019: targeted partnerships
In February 2018, the URD signed a partnership with EDS limited to reforming the electoral commission. In 2019, it appeared alongside the PDCI-RDA in the platform gathered around Henri Konan Bédié.
2021: a demand for consideration
Ahead of the March 2021 legislative elections, the URD President regretted that the major opposition parties had kept their smaller allies out of the drawing up of candidate lists; the party then chose alliances case by case, region by region.
2024-2025: bringing people together again
On 12 June 2024, Danièle Boni-Claverie launched an opposition platform bringing together the URD, several parties and civil society organisations. On 10 March 2025, the URD took part in founding CAP-CI, of which its President became deputy spokesperson, then spokesperson in September.
